PHOLDE

Pholde is a dark ambient project in which the sounds are also made from metal sculptures started in 2002.
The sounds are produced from metal of different tensile strengths, sizes, and thicknesses in which reverb is the only effect being used. Homemade custom metal instruments, as well as circular saw blades, car springs, iron meshing, and fan blades are bowed and scraped with hand files, smooth and threaded metal rods, angle iron, and blocks of steel to produce atmospheric, haunting soundscapes.

Bryan Eubanks & Cat Lamb (USA)http://www.sacredrealism.org/bryaneubanks/index.html
http://www.sacredrealism.org/catlamb/index.html

Catherine Lamb (b. 1982, Olympia, WA.) is a composer/violist exploring sound through intimate ensembles and solo work. She is interested in microscopic color variances in (mostly) narrow bands, often with an ever-opening form. She is interested in the elemental/spectral interaction between tones and their shadows, between beings. She works with the phenomenological dimensions of quiet perceptual/sensual layers moving in and out of presence, as a being moving in space.

Bryan Eubanks (b. 1977, WA.) is a musician focused on collaborative improvisation, solo musical projects, and generative sound installations. Primarily active within the traditions of experimental and live electronic music, he works with unstable instruments of his own design that incorporate open-circuits, samplers, radio transmission, feedback, digital synthesis, the soprano saxophone, and other acoustic instruments. His compositions and installations involve practical research into computer music, generative composition, electronics, and sound localization in an effort to bring into being situations that examine transformations in the perception of sonic space/time.

Zong! washes up from the deeps onto the shoals of memory. A meditation in poetry on history, loss, mourning and redemption, it floats on the skin of memory, explores the tension between word and silence and explodes into notes of remembering. M. NourbeSe Philip - author of Zong!

GONE FISHING 004
Monday May 14th
Hybrid Frequency (Yecid Ortega)
The Knot (Nick Storring/Tilman Lewis)
ISO

at SOMEWHERE THERE (Toronto)
$10, 8pm-10pm

i) HYBRID FREQUENCY
Hybrid Frequency is a solo project from Colombian Yecid Ortega. Experimentation with different sources, mostly natural and organic including Latin-American folk instruments such as “quenas” and “ocarinas” among others to give color and texture to the subtle soundscapes that overlay the noisy walls made by many different tools such as synthesizers, made electronic devices, computer software, effect pedals and field recordings. Sometimes harsh and sometimes drone , ambient or sometimes experimental.

http://www.livestream.com/ruidolatino

ii) THE KNOT
Nick Storring  and Tilman Lewis are errant classical cellists. With allegiance to both form and freedom, we embark on sonic explorations that are rooted in folk traditions, new musics, and an experimental pop sensibility. We love to subvert the instrument's lyricism, drawing not so much on extended techniques as on an array of audacious contra-techniques. A Knot performance ventures into demanding territory. But almost despite ourselves, an elemental beauty shines through.

iii) ISO
[Experimental Electronica]
Music for the regeneration of the ISO. Listener and a healthy love. ISO of your ears, they stop thinking about food and music, I feed. ISO is a vision of man. Voice in the life of this vision is to provide a variety of ways. It was not my game is not an option. http://www.isound.com/#/IS0

GF.003 - Monday April 9th

[i]
NEW POSITIONS (Neil Rankin)
Neil Rankin (Gay, Foxfire, plus way more!) gets way out with his solo manifestations. Anti-beat poetry meets sludge rhythm jams. Dirty synth tones and bass loops buckle under each others weight. Free sax notes bubble from the deep. Literary hopes weave in & out of dark pulsating drone textures, abstract rhythm communicates with human speech patterns.

NOBUO KUBOTA & DAVID SAIT
In 1969, Nobuo Kubota abandoned a 10-year career in architecture to devote himself fully to sculpture and music. He pursued his late-night associations with a group of Toronto artists and musicians who, individually and collectively, were pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. From 1962 through 1976 he played saxophone with the Artist’s Jazz Band in Toronto.  They released four albums in two-record sets.  In 1974 he joined the Toronto free improvisation band known as CCMC (Canadian Creative Music Collective) and began experimenting with making sounds using a variety of ordinary objects including children’s toys.
Abstract expressionist musician, sculptor, sound poet, architect, videographer, zen buddhist, performance artist and 2009 Governor General’s Award recipient.  Nobuo Kubota’s creative riffs resonate through all disciplines. He currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario.

Nobuo will be joined by David Sait on Chinese zither (guzheng) www.guzheng.ca in their first meeting.

The Next Trip...

GONE FISHING on Monday March 12th
Set 1
Bob Vespaziani - solo Wave Drum with electronic manipulation

Set 2Meiko Ando is an independent Butoh dancer and a choreographer based in Toronto. She is also a visual artist who creates relief prints and sculptures with Japanese paper and plant matter. She was born in Tokyo, studied classical ballet, ballroom dancing, modern dance and came to Canada in 1982. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance at University of Waterloo. From 1987 to 1990 Meiko returned to Japan to perform for a professional Butoh dance company and at the same time worked as a researcher of Japanese traditional arts and festivals. This experience later influenced her choreographies such as a series of Butoh dance called "Onibaba". "Onibaba" was performed in Toronto, Quebec, Mexico City and St.Louis. Meiko also designs costumes and visual art for her stage.
One of Meiko's recent works is a collaboration with the music improvisation group Odradek (Andy Yue, James Bailey and Michelangelo Iaffaldano) at Somewhere There in Toronto, 2009. Inspired by the music of this collaboration, Meiko has created 10 prints in a handmade box.

Robin Howell, bassoonist, was born in LA in 1955 into a family of artists.  A student of Don Christlieb, Walter Stiftner, Fredrick Moritz, Michel Piguet and Abraham Milstein, he began his professional career at age 11. With dual specialties in Early and Contemporary Music, he has played with some of the world’s top ensembles, including Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik, Apollo Ensemble, Smithsonian Chamber Players, to name a few, and was formerly a member of the Sinfonica Nacional de Peru. Robin is a graduate of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.  Currently, he lives in Toronto as a freelance player, instrument restorator, designer, composer and teacher.

Set 3
Percussionist Mike Gennaro has performed with Mats Gustafsson, John Butcher, Kevin Drumm and Eugene Chadbourne among others. His heroes include Max Roach, John Bonham, Art Blakey, Ringo Starr, Paul Lovens, Roger Turner, Keith Moon and Al Jackson.

Michael Keith’s current work finds him re-imagining the traditional modes of expression of an electric guitarist; still deep‐rooted in the blues and crackling with the energy of rock, Michael’s music is uniquely identfied by his genuinely global concept of the contemporary guitarist.

My First Time Fishing

"GONE FISHING" is the name of the new monthly series of experimental music curated David Sait & Michael Keith. The 2nd Monday of every month they will be presenting an eclectic mix of sights and sounds for folks (and hopefully some newcomers) to enjoy!

Format = Three 20-30 minute sets of diverse and ambitious programming packed into one night with MixTape bliss providing the glue.

The first night (Monday February 13th, 2012) will feature noise artist Michael Murphy. This will be his first time at Somewhere There. Michael will bring a collection of homemade instruments paired with a ridiculous amount of sonic modulation. Hand-built oscillators and contact mic-metal objects just waiting to be enlivened!

Then up is Michael Keith on baritone ukulele. The music will be deeply informed by his love of instruments like dotar, tanbour and setar as well as many traditional (and non) musics.

Up last is David Sait. David has recently released a new cd investigating the lo-fi sounds of self created/pre-recorded drums on 4-Track cassette mixed with the beautiful and haunting tone of his Chinese guzheng. His music stands by itself
and is always deeply inspired.

The show will start at 8pm sharp.
Admission is only $10 or PWYC
